Binary star systems are the most common type of multiple star systems. Of the two stars the brighter star is the primary (A) while the dimmer star is the secondary (B). These stars will orbit a common center of mass in an either wide or close formation. Binary stars are not to be confused with double stars, which are stars that appear close to each other from Earth, but in space are actually far apart. You likely have already heard of a binary star system like Sirius, Alpha Centauri, Rigel, Beta Lyrae, or others.
